John Jullens is a Partner at Strategy& (formerly Booz & Company) with more than twenty years of management consulting and industry experience in North America, Europe, and Asia.  He currently co-leads the firm’s Engineered Products & Services practice in Greater China.

 

Born in The Netherlands, he initially dreamed of becoming a professional musician, studying classical trumpet with, among others, William Vacchiano (Principal Trumpet, New York Philharmonic) and Peter Masseurs (Principal Trumpet, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra).  

 

After a lip injury forced him to abandon his musical aspirations, he decided to obtain a B.S. in Marketing & International Business from New York University, and, upon graduation, joined Ford Motor Company as a management trainee in the Ford College Graduate Program.  Over the next five years, he rotated through various positions in Marketing, Consumer Litigation, and Corporate Finance, before deciding to return to his home country, The Netherlands, to obtain a MBA from Universiteit Nyenrode. 

 

After graduation, he joined Andersen Consulting’s Strategic Services practice in Amsterdam, where he spent the next few years on assignments for leading multinational clients in various European countries, including Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and, of course, The Netherlands.

 

About one year after relocating to Munich, he left Andersen Consulting, and joined BBDO Consulting as the firm’s Automotive Practice Leader.  During this time, he focused primarily on branding and relationship marketing assignments for leading automakers, such as Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Mitsubishi, and Volkswagen.  Having spent eight years in Europe, he returned to the U.S. after accepting an offer from Mitsubishi to become the firm’s Director of Strategic Planning for North America.

   

He joined the firm in September 2005, and spent his first few years in North America, before transferring to the firm’s Shanghai office, where he has since advised numerous multinational and local Chinese companies on a wide range of strategic challenges, including market entry into China as well as international expansion out of China and how to achieve top-line growth through organic or inorganic means.  He has also helped numerous clients improve their organizational capabilities across numerous functional areas, including operations effectiveness, brand and customer management, channel management, and sales & marketing effectiveness.

 

He currently resides in Shanghai with his wife and daughter.
